Portland Hearts of Pine, A Maine soccer success Story
Portland, Maine has officially joined the world of professional soccer. With the launch of the Portland Hearts of Pine, fans across the state now have a hometown club to cheer for in USL League One. From their name and crest to record-breaking ticket sales and a dream debut on the field, this team is already making waves, and Selling out stadiums.
This Year I had the privilege to work as a Ball boy, and game day staff for the Hearts of Pine, and really experience the team dynamic first hand.
A Team Born from Maine’s Spirit
The Portland Hearts of Pine were founded in 2023 and unveiled their branding in April 2024. Their name pays tribute to Maine’s forests while connecting with global soccer traditions. The club motto, “Lead with Your Heart,” is a nod to the state motto Dirigo (“I lead”).
The crest itself blends Maine’s identity:
• A soaring pine tree represents resilience.
• Flowing water highlights the state’s coastlines and lakes.
• A bright red heart stands as a symbol of unity and passion.
This powerful identity has already captured attention well beyond New England.
Coaching and Leadership
In November 2024, the Hearts named Bobby Murphy as the club’s first head coach and sporting director. Known for developing young talent in MLS and USL academies, Murphy is tasked with building a competitive squad while laying a foundation for long-term success in Maine.
Kits and Merchandise
The team’s uniforms celebrate Maine’s natural beauty and culture:
• Home Kit (“Woods & Water”) – Green and blue hoops symbolize the forests and ocean, with red trim inspired by the Dirigo Heart.
• Away Kit (“Bandit”) – A clean white jersey dotted with red hearts, trimmed in navy.
• Goalkeeper Kits – Featuring bold red “Brick Wall” and blue “Welcome to Maine” designs.
Fans embraced the branding immediately. Jerseys and merchandise have already shipped to all 48 continental states.
Record-Breaking Fan Support
The Hearts of Pine have quickly proven that Maine is a soccer state. Nearly 4,500 season ticket deposits were placed before the team even played a match—an all-time record for USL League One. By early 2025, 90% of season tickets were sold or reserved. The team also managed to sell more jerseys than every other USL 1 team combined!
The May 4th home opener at Fitzpatrick Stadium sold out completely after the stadium underwent $2.5 million in renovations, including new turf and stand area.
It has been a real pleasure to be part of the Hearts team this year and I look forward to the rest of the games this season. It has been a inaugural season to Remember!
