The Lie We Tell Ourselves: “I’m Not a Morning Person.”
The Lie We Tell Ourselves: “I’m Not a Morning Person.”
But here’s the truth:
You’re not a night owl, you’re just sleep deprived and lying to yourself.
Most people aren’t “built” for late nights — they’ve just built terrible habits.
Scrolling at midnight. Gaming until 2am. Bright screens frying your brain when it’s supposed to shut down.
Then they wake up groggy and say “I’m not a morning person”.
But the health effects are brutal.
A massive study of over 400,000 people found that self-identified night owls have higher rates of diabetes, mood disorders, respiratory disease, and overall mortality.
And it doesn’t stop there — early risers report significantly higher productivity than night owls. You literally lose hours of peak focus just by shifting your sleep later.
And still, people defend the lifestyle.
The numbers don’t lie:
Only 15% of people are true night owls.
Yet most claim they are.
Why?
Because it’s easier to say “I’m not a morning person” than “I have zero discipline at night.”
When I stopped lying to myself and fixed my routine, everything changed fast. My mood, my focus, my athletic ability, my stress — even how sharp I felt in conversations. I didn’t become a “morning person.” I just stopped sabotaging myself every night with bad habits.
If you’re constantly tired, it’s not because mornings hate you.
It’s because you’re making choices that guarantee you’ll feel terrible — mentally, physically, and productively.
Your brain is literally built to perform best in the morning. I wasted years never experiencing that because I didn’t feel like getting up in the morning.
Now my system is stupidly simple:
• One wake-up time
• A strict nighttime cutoff
• Phone away before bed
• Water + 20 pushups the moment I’m up
It’s insane how much easier morning feel with a few healthy habits!
That small routine helped me start a business, publish 10 articles, and accomplish my athletic goals— and most of the work happened before most people roll out of bed.
So here’s my challenge to anyone who insists they’re “not a morning person”:
Give it 7 days.
Just one week of consistent good evening and morning habits.
Then tell me you don’t feel different. Because mornings are the most powerful part of the day.
Because if I’m being honest, 85% of people who say they’re night owls… aren’t.
They’re just stuck in habits that keep them tired, unhealthy, and average.
Are you one of the 15% that are true “Night Owls”?
